Dr. Danielle Bassett on Gender Bias in STEM
The underrepresentation of female academics in STEM fields is already a prevalent issue but did you know that researchers themselves can propagate gender bias via their citation practices?
Join us for a conversation with Prof. Bassett, J. Peter Skirkanich Professor of Bioengineering, Electrical & Systems Engineering, Physics & Astronomy, Neurology, and Psychiatry, regarding gender bias in STEM. Dr. Basset's research specifically focused on uncovering the driving forces behind gender/racial imbalance in STEM reference lists as well as potential tools that can be used to mitigate the perpetuation of these inequalities.
If you're interested in learning more, here is a link to a study evaluating the extent and drivers of gender imbalance in neuroscience reference lists. There have also been follow up perspectives in Neuron, Nature Neuroscience, andTICS, as well as editorials in Brain, Nature Neuroscience, and Nature Reviews Physics. There is a generalization to another journal here. Here is the link to the study in astronomy. Here is the Google Chrome extension. Here is the site with software that is executable from any internet browser and the current version of the citation diversity statement. Lastly, here is a Github repository.
